In the pursuit for global control of the internet’s major networking nodes and storage of digital information, Google have excelled their ambitions to produce the world’s biggest Data Centre.
Google Data City is the largest physical expression of anthropology on earth, where the people’s data is manifested in its physical form and the unseen is now very palpable. This city of servers has a total of 1 yottabyte of data storage [1 trillion terabytes] to quench the planet’s thirst for data consumption.
With the largest collection of advanced servers in the world, overheating of the hard drives is the primary concern, where temperatures can affect the speed and even the inconceivable failure of these high-tech systems.
To alleviate the colossal levels of heat, refrigerated cold water canals facilitate the cooling of all servers, where water is pumped upwards and after filtering through the servers, hot water is discharged through a multitude of pipes and into the hot water canals. This enourmous amount of water expulsion creates this city’s own weather system, where the autonomous workings of the machine can be seen in the amount of cloud generated.
Servers are arranged in aisles that stack vertically, with the canals located between each stack, forming canyons soaring into the sky. Power distribution units are situated on each floor below the server racks, with diverse fibre optic routes to every server, facilitated by dual power feeds entering through every level on the south-west and north-east face of the facility. The data canyons sit on a concrete plinth, accomodating all of the substations and water chilling systems that serve and facilitate the data’s existence.
The city is oriented in a south westerly direction, to maximise heat dissapation through the prevailing winds, that run through the data canyons. With the world’s data stored in one centralised location, this city is truly a monument to data.
